Pelphrey: No Rings, Nets Or Trophies

Arkansas coach John Pelphrey just wrapped up his press conference previewing the Mississippi State game and you could’ve guessed his message.

Yes, the Razorbacks are off to a great start. Yes, they’ve exceeded expectations. But, no, they haven’t accomplished anything.

“Correct me if I’m wrong,” Pelphrey said. “We haven’t bought any rings, haven’t cut down any nets and nobody has given us a trophy.”

Arkansas will tip off Southeastern Conference play with a home game against Mississippi State on Saturday night at 7 p.m. It will be another test for the group, which has only three players who have actually played in a conference game. So Pelphrey refuses to get ahead of himself.

“If we don’t stay humble and hungry we’re destined for problems,” Pelphrey said.

The Bulldogs, who won the SEC West last season, were hit with a lot of turnover this offseason after losing stars like forward Charles Rhodes and Jamont Gordon. MSU (10-5) has struggled some, but is coming off an impressive win against Western Kentucky. Center Jarvis Varnado leads the way, averaging 12.8 points, 9.9 rebounds and 5.5 blocks a game. The rest of MSU’s starting lineup? All guards. So it should be an interesting matchup.

We’ll be bringing you much more on Saturday’s game in the next couple days. Stay tuned.
