Sitting here at Baum Stadium in the fifth inning of today’s game between Arkansas and Valparaiso, and Hog fans will be happy to know their team is taking care of business with a 7-1 lead. But the reason for this particular blog isn’t baseball. Instead, I wanted to let you in on a few postseason awards honored today to the Arkansas women’s basketball team.
Ceira Ricketts, a 5-foot-9 guard from Louisville, has been named Southeastern Conference Co-Freshman of the Year by the league coaches, While that’s not much of a surprise, it did come as a shock that Ricketts shared the award with LaShondra Barrett of LSU, and not with Tennessee freshman and Morrilton, Ark., native Shekinna Stricklen.
Ricketts was also named second-team All-SEC by the league coaches, becoming just the second freshman at Arkansas to accomplish that feat along with Christy Smith.
“I was a little surprised I came along this much in my freshman year,” Ricketts said today, following Arkansas practice. “I’m just glad I was able to step up and help the team.”
Joining Ricketts on the SEC All-Freshman team was fellow guard Lyndsay Harris, while junior Charity Ford also took home 6th Player of the Year honors.
