Arkansas 7, Nebraska 1 (8th Inning)
The Razorbacks just got a few more runs thanks to a big bases loaded hit by designated hitter Travis Sample.
Sample cleared the bases with a double to right field. It was the first time the Razorbacks had scored since the second inning, giving them a much bigger cushion. It was almost more. Andrew Darr just hit a deep, deep fly ball to center field with the bases loaded. Another five feet and it would’ve cleared the fence.
But as it stands, Arkansas has a comfortable lead. The Cornhuskers have used eight pitchers. And the Razorbacks staff is carrying a no-hitter into the eighth inning.
Arkansas 4, Nebraska 1 (6th Inning)
Arkansas’ pitching staff has had some problems with walks, but the Razorbacks still are doing something impressive.
Nebraska has no hits through six innings. Most of the credit belongs to Bolsinger, who has thrown four scoreless innings in relief on starter Brett Eibner. Of course, Arkansas has gotten some good defense to keep the Cornhuskers hitless. Take Ben Tschepikow for instance.
Nebraska’s Cade Thompson just hit a sharp grounder that hopped off first baseman Andy Wilkins glove. However, Tschepikow stayed with the play, fielded it and fired it to firs to get Thompson out before he reached the bag. It ended the inning.
Arkansas 4, Nebraska 1 (4th Inning)
Arkansas has gotten a lot of production at the plate tonight.
But its possible that on St. Patrick’s Day, the luck of the Irish, is on their side, too.
I’m not sure how else to explain the fact that Nebraska has had the bases loaded with no outs in both the second and third innings, but have come away with only one run. It just happened for the second time in the third inning, when Eibner walked the first two batters he faced and was replaced by Mike Bolsinger. Bolsinger didn’t get off to a good start after a throwing error to first base on a ground ball, but did an incredible job of keeping the Cornhuskers off the scoreboard.
He struck out Nebraska’s best hitter, Adam Bailey (8 HRs, 28 RBIs), and followed it with another strikeout. Then he got Nick Sullivan to hit a weak grounder to the mound to strand three runners.
So it’s 4-1 Arkansas in the top of the fourth.
Arkansas 4, Nebraska 1 (3rd Inning)
Nebraska starting pitcher Erik Bird had a bad night. Arkansas center fielder Collin Kuhn is having a great one.
Kuhn just hit his second double of the game off Bird to chase the pitcher from the game. Kuhn drove in a run with the big hit, helping Arkansas jump out to a big lead. James McCann also doubled in the inning. Arkansas had four extra base hits off Bird in two innings.
Bird’s line: 1 2/3 innings, 5 hits, 4 runs, 4 earned, 0 walks and 2 strikeouts
Arkansas 2, Nebraska 1 (2nd Inning)
Blogging my prove difficult tonight, but I’m going to do my best.
Arkansas is leading 2-0 after getting a couple of runs in the first. As mentioned below, Collin Kuhn led off with a double. Two batters later, Ben Tschepikow hit a two-run home run off Nebraska’s Erik Bird. It was Tschepikow’s sixth home run this season, which is amazing considering he only had four in his career entering the season. It also extends Tschepikow’s hit streak to 11 games.
The quick start may not hold up. Pitcher Brett Eibner has walked the bases loaded here in the second inning.
The good news: Nebraska’s Cody Asche just grounded into a double play. A run scored, but it’s all the damage that was done.
Arkansas leads 2-1 and is going back to the plate.
Pregame (Sort of)
I was supposed to do a pregame blog, but had some computer problems here in Baum Stadium. The good news: It seems to be fixed. For now.
So this is a first inning blog.
Arkansas starter Brett Eibner retired the side in the first inning to get the Razorbacks off to a good start. Center fielder Collin Kuhn just helped some more by leading the game off with a double to right center field. It was the second straight game Kuhn had led off with an extra base hit. He led off with a triple in the first inning of Sunday’s game against Florida.
Kuhn has moved over to third with a Scott Lyons ground out, so Arkansas has a runner on third with one out.
Keep checking back. Now that I’ve got a connection, I’ll be updating frequently.
