It was a chilly day on the field in Reynolds Razorback Stadium. Arkansas practiced for roughly three hours and it rained for more than half the workout. But we were still there throughout and, now that our fingers have thawed out, here’s the scoop on the practice:
Play of the Day: Nothing particularly amazing happened, but perhaps the most memorable play came in 11-on-11 drills when quarterback Tyler Wilson and receiver Jarius Wright connected on a deep ball. Wilson was excited about the throw, raising his arm in the air after Wright came down with the catch. The crowed liked it, too. It was a good moment for Wilson, who is fighting an uphill battle with Ryan Mallett to win the starting job at quarterback.
Offensive Player of the Day: I’ve got to give it to the guy on the receiving end of the big catch. See, that wasn’t the only thing Wright did during Wednesday’s practice. He also latched onto two more deep balls (both coming off Mallett throws) during seven-on-seven drills. It was a great day for the sophomore, who started the 2008 season slow but turned it on late. He was a deep-play threat Wednesday.
Defensive Player of the Day: It’s so hard to break down the defense when the Razorbacks aren’t in full pads. It doesn’t help when defensive coordinator Willy Robinson shreds them after the workout. But one player that did stand out to Robinson was reserve defensive tackle Alfred Davis, who made a few plays in team work. Also, CB’s Isaac Madison and Jerell Norton came down with interceptions.
Quote of the Day: Robinson on the defense’s struggle during a looong practice — “They let their minds take over and got tired. They should know this can happen anytime, anywhere, any place, and we’ve got to realize we lost eight games on the last play of the friggin’ game. So we’ve got to learn how to finish. We’ve got to come out here and battle as long as it takes. Our guys have got to respond to it. When they get tired, they’ve got to get upset. Get pissed off and stayed piss off and learn how to compete.â€
Random Thought of the Day: I can see why the Razorbacks are holding out hope that RB Broderick Green will be granted permission to play this season by the NCAA. The former USC back has shown off his size, speed and agility during two days of practice. He has been pretty impressive in non-contact work, but I’m really interested to see what he can do when the pads are put on later this week.
Schedule Update: Arkansas has 13 practices left this spring. The Hogs will take Thursday off, then return to the field Friday afternoon.
