Morning Links, Practice Nine Football Wrap

When I left the office last night at 8:45, I had a feeling I forgot something.

I woke up this morning and forgot what it was: The football practice wrap.

Oops.

I’ll do that in a minute, but first wanted to post a couple of links for story’s in today’s paper. First, check out Ryan Malashock game story and notes from Arkansas’ come-from-behind win against Arizona State last night. Next, check out the story I wrote on running back De’Anthony Curtis and Alex Abrams’ practice report, which includes Brandon Barnett’s return after missing seven practices because of his stepfather’s death.

Now to the practice wrap:

Play of the Day: It wasn’t an exciting day on the field. No big scrimmage. So no better day to look at something an offensive lineman did. We watched Arkansas tackle Ray Dominguez flatten safety Matt Harris with a crushing block on a run play during 11-on-11 drills. Dominguez had a running start as Broderick Green was carrying the ball and laid out a big block that sprung a big carry.

Offensive Player of the Day: Again, nothing too exciting going on Tuesday. So let’s give a sentimental award. Brandon Barnett returned after missing the past seven practices because of his stepfather’s death. It has been a tough and unexpected spring for Barnett, but you could tell the Razorbacks were happy to have him back. As Tim Horton told me, he’s a “big Brandon Barnett fan.”

Defensive Player of the Day: I’m not sure Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino would want to hand anything out to a defensive player Tuesday. I’m not sure anyone earned it. Petrino was pretty frustrated with the group as it seemed to be dragging through practice. He unleashed a nice scream session in which he demanded that they run to the football and stop jogging around. In so many words.

Quote of the Day: I was in feature writing mode, so I only spent a few minutes with De’Anthony Curtis and Tim Horton. But I thought this was an interesting quote from Horton regarding Curtis’ disappointing freshman season: “Maybe we didn’t prepare him well enough and that’s on me. And maybe he wasn’t quite ready but we had to throw him in there. But he’s going to be fine and if he just keeps doing what he’s doing, he’s going to have a great career here.”

Random Thought of the Day: There’s no denying that Ryan Mallett is a really talented quarterback. But there’s also no denying that when Mallett is off, he’s off. I was watching him overthrow and underthrow receivers for a good portion of Tuesday’s practice. It didn’t last throughout the whole thing. In fact, he fired plenty of impressive passes before it was over. But his consistency is still a work in progress.
