Here are some quotes from Arkansas’ news conference just now, which took place in a tent outside L. Dale Mitchell Park. The Razorbacks practiced for 75 minutes here in Norman, Okla., in advance of their regional opener against Washington State at 1 p.m. Friday.
Arkansas coach Dave Van Horn:
on whether seeing Washington State already will serve as an advantage:
“I don’t think there’s an advantage. It maybe takes the edge off a little bit because you know what you’re getting into. … The Washington State series was a long time ago. It was opening weekend and everybody was excited. At the time, we didn’t how we’d be this year. Obviously, we thought Washington State was going to be a good team and they battled us. All three games could have gone either way. We don’t look at the wins and losses, but we do know what they’re all about.”
on Arkansas’ tendency to “find ways to win”:
“This team to me has played some very good games. We’ve played just good enough to win. We’ve found ways to win. I don’t really ever think throughout this season that we’ve played to our potential. Blame it on whoever. Blame it on the coaches, or whoever. But I don’t think we’ve played as good as I think we could’ve been. We still have time to do it. That’s the positive. There isn’t a better time.”
on the injury status of senior shortstop Scott Lyons, who is recovering from a bruised shoulder:
“Scott threw today, better than he had thrown. His arm action’s a little bit different. He’s trying to fight that shoulder injury. But he swung the bat really well. That gives us another option there offensively and maybe defensively. He’s getting close. I wouldn’t say starting tomorrow at 1 he’ll be at short. But don’t count him out before the weekend’s over if we get to play enough games. … (Lyons at DH is) definitely a consideration.
on playing at L. Dale Mitchell Park, which has fences 385 feet to the gaps and 411 feet to center:
“It’s a very big ballpark that plays very small. The wind usually howls out. Today I think it’s out of the northwest and it’s shooting out to right. Tomorrow it’s supposed to be out of the east and I think Saturday and Sunday out of the south. As you can tell, I’ve been checking the forecast because it plays a big part in this ballpark. Nationally, it’s known as a hitter’s ballpark, and it can be that way. But good pitching can slow that down a bit.”
Senior outfielder Chase Leavitt:
on whether him and his fellow seniors have discussed the end of their careers:
“We haven’t really talked a lot about that. We don’t want to think about that. We just want to play hard and live it up. (The end of our careers) will come eventually, but we’ve still got a ways to go. We’ve got a lot of games left to play.”
Junior pitcher Dallas Keuchel:
on his nerves heading into tomorrow’s game:
“I’m a little anxious. It’s been about a week and half since (my last start on) Wednesday. Washington State’s a good hitting team. I have a lot of respect for their ballclub and what they can do. I just want to pitch my game and hopefully get a win.
on his memories of his start against the Cougars:
“I remember a lot. I have great respect for their lineup. The home run ball I gave up to (Jared) Prince, I still remember that one in the forefront of my memory. I’m looking forward to throwing to him and my other summer teammate, Shea Vucinich. They can swing it a little bit. I got a lot of ground ball outs I remember. I just need to keep the ball down and I think I’ll be fine.
on whether he feels pressure:
“Not really. Just try to go out there and have fun. I came here to the University of Arkansas for a reason. That’s to win a regional, get to a super regional and hopefully get to Omaha. It’s just a fun time. Just relax and fun.”
