Another national award, another Razorback in the running.
The Doak Walker Award Watch List was announced today and Arkansas running back Michael Smith is one of 45 in the running. It’s no surprise Smith is included after his performance last season. He led the Razorbacks in rushing with 1,072 yards and 8 touchdowns before being slowed at the end of the year by injuries. Arkansas has made sure he will have help this season.
Yesterday, Arkansas sophomore Ryan Mallett was named to the Davey O’Brien Watch List, which is presented to the nation’s top quarterback. Junior D.J. Williams is on the watch list for the John Mackey Award, which is presented to the nation’s top tight end.
Arkansas says it is the first time in school history players have been nominated for these awards in the same season. In addition, the Razorbacks are one of eight teams to have a player on all three lists this year. Ohio State, Virginia Tech, Oregon, LSU, Oklahoma, Florida and Notre Dame are the others.
What does it mean? Well, not much right now. But it is a sign the Razorbacks have some pretty talented players on offense.
