What We Learned: Defensive Changes Galore

I’m trying to multi-task right now. Listening to the first Bobby Petrino Live radio show, which is going on at the Catfish Hole as week speak. And trying to write some notes from today’s practice.

It’s a tricky operation. But here goes:

The biggest news of the day comes from the defensive side of the ball, where defensive coordinator Willy Robinson has made several changes. How many? Well, let’s run down the list.

Jerry Franklin has been moved from weakside linebacker to middle linebacker in place of Wendel Davis.

Terrell Williams, a true freshman, has stepped into the first team spot at weakside linebacker.

Rudell Crim has moved into the first-team group at cornerback in place of Greg Gatson.

Jerell Norton has stepped into the first-team spot at safety in place of Matt Harris.

Jake Bequette has reclaimed his first-team position at defensive end in place of Damario Ambrose.

“We are making sure we have guys that will tackle,” Robinson said. “That’s the bottom line. After our last scrimmage, we had to evaluate guys who showed courage, who ran at full speed to the ball. They might not necessarily be the ones who are right all the time, but they are doing some good things. And we can go from there.”

Robinson said these changes aren’t necessarily permanent ones. His hope is that the guys who have slipped to the second team will bounce back and try to regain their starting jobs. But it’s interesting.

What do the players think about all these changes? Well, I just heard DE Jake Bequette, who is with Petrino at his radio show right now, chime in a moment ago.

“This is America baby. It’s all about competition,” Bequette said.
