Who’s Arkansas’ Best All-Time Quarterback?

Who’s the best quarterback in Arkansas history?

Was Quinn Grovey better than Bill Montgomery? Was Joe Ferguson more impressive than Clint Stoerner? Or was Matt Jones better than them all?

As part of The Morning News’ college football preview section, I surveyed nine longtime sports writers, former Arkansas coaches and sports talk radio personalities to try to answer the question: Who’s Arkansas’ best all-time quarterback?

I asked each panelist to give me his list of the top 5 quarterbacks, and then all the votes were added up. I gave five points for a first-place vote, four points for a second-place vote, three points for a third-place vote and so on. I then added up all the points to determine the ranking of Arkansas’ top 5 all-time quarterbacks.

I received several different votes for the No. 1 quarterback. You might be surprised with the results. I know I was. (By the way, I didn’t have a vote, though you should recognize all the panelists who voted in the survey.)

I’m not going to give away which quarterback finished at the top of the list, or how the rest of the top 5 shook out. It will be in the college football preview section, which comes out Sunday. In the meantime, who do you think is the best quarterback in Arkansas history?

Is it Jon Brittenum? Or maybe Fred Marshall? Or how about Kevin Scanlon?

Let me know what you think. Give me your top 5 list, and then check on Sunday to see how it compares with how the votes added up.

The first qb at Arkansas that I can remember hearing about was Bill Montgomery. The first one I ever got to see in person was Joe Ferguson. Clint Stoerner is the one I have the most compassion for, and Quinn Grovey and Matt Jones were the most exciting we’ve ever had with the nod probably to MJ. I still think you would be hard pressed to name a better quarterback than Joe Ferguson. In terms of accuracy and arm strength, he was the man. He is also the only one of any of those qbs that had a true NFL career, 14 seasons. He was also the reason Clint Stoerner is even on the list. Joe Ferguson, gets my vote.

David: Thanks for the input. Make sure you check out our football preview section tomorrow morning. I think you might be surprised who finished No. 1, according to the panel Alex put together

  3. Steve Douglas Says:

There have been many exciting qb’s on HogHill. I can still see Joe Ferguson and Mike Reppond shredding Texas. I can see Ron Calcagni running that quarterback draw against Oklahoma in the Orange bowl. Wow!! Matt Jones!! Has he wasted the most individual talent? I sure hope not! Clint Stoerner” when you fall down get back up and dust yourself off. Grovey, thanks to Kenny Hatfield, right qb for the system.I can even remember Mike Kirkland and Scott Bull showing fantastic flashes. Remember both had NFL talent. Bull even started for a while. Enough said for the great second runners. THE BEST EVER “BILL COOLAND MONTGOMERY” Maybe never a pro, his own choosing I believe. Never out of a game, always at the top of the SWC, Game of the century. When you look up excitement in the dictionary He and Dicus appear. Never before and never after have you seen a better COLLEGE quarterback. Combo pass or scramble. I still love that cat almost as much as I love my wife and kids. Remember Montgomery versus Manning in the Sugar bowl. another loss but what excitement. 1. Montgomery
    2. Joe Ferguson 3. Fred Marshall 4. Clint Stoerner 5. Matt Jones 5. Quinn Grovey

1.) Bill Montgomery 2.) Joe Ferguson 3.) Matt Jones 4.) Quinn Grovey 5.) Brad Taylor

I would like to point out that Jon Brittenum is the only Hog quarterback to have a song and record about him, “Quarterbackin’ Man” at least as far as I know. And a shout out for John Eichler who only started one game, but it was my first Razorback game to attend, Wichita State in 1969. He is my second favorite afte Montgomery. If Matt Jones had Montgomery’s attitude he could have been the best college qb ever.

    No love for Casey Dick?

I’m only 22 years old, I vaguely remember Clint Stoerner, I grew up with Matt Jones, and most recently Casey. Matt Jones was exciting, but he wasn’t really a quarterback. He never showed the ability to take command of his team and lead them. He had exceptional individual talent, but at the quarterback position, you have to be able to make everyone around you better. I don’t regret that Matt Jones was our quarterback, He certainly won games that we wouldn’t have had he not been there. I think Casey was our best one in my lifetime as a hog fan, simply because he persevered. 2008 was not a banner season for Arkansas, but Casey ran himself into the ground for the hogs, doing everything within his ability to get us a win, I respect him for that. The first game against Western Illinois should prove that, never having been known for his speed, but because of a down year on the line, he was rolling out of the pocket nearly every play, and taking hard shots to try and complete a pass down field. If Jarius Wright, and Joe Adams, and Greg Childs had of understanded the offense better, and known the routes better, Casey Dick would have put up gaudy numbers last year. He was just a victim of circumstance. Show a little more empathy hog fans, our future is very bright, but don’t forget about the people that helped get us there.

I agree Jacob… I was so impressed with Casey.. He took alot of heat and bashing but he seemed to always hold his head up and represent the hogs well… On the field and off the field… He improved drastically from the year prior to that… I’m glad he atleast had the senior year that he did… WPS!

  7. d Says:

    Jon Brittenum

  8. d Says:

No one ever had an arm like Jon Brittenum!

  9. Larry Says:

Most of these youngsters don’t know how good Bill Montgomery was. He very seldom threw an INT and he was a complete team player. I know, I watched him play during his career at UofA as well as in the 1969 Shootout with Texas. He gets my vote for #1 with Joe 2nd, Brittenum 3rd, Stoerner 4th. You can throw the rest in there anyway you want. I have been seriously watching the Hogs play since 1963 and by the time he is done this Mallet kid my be the best to ever step on campus.

  10. terry Says:

    1. joe fergie 2. ron calcagni 3. clint stoerner 4. quinn grovey 5. bill montgomery

  11. Cole Kolikohn Says:

I go back to Fred Marshall and without a doubt at the University of Arkansas thebest QB was Bill Montgomery. Montgomery could run the triple option, roll out and pass, drop back and pass and was a heckuva scrambler. How good Montgomery could have been remains to be debated because he injured his passing shoulder severely in the Sugar Bowl vs Georgia and was never quite the same in arm strength. Very exciting player who would drop back in the pocket and be as still as could be and then when pressure would come in would take off in what seemed like all directions. Also was not as big as advertised,I’m guessing something like 5-11, 150 and not 6-1, 180. Joe Ferguson is second, he had a terrific arm but a poor defense and a group of running backs who fumbled all the time. Number 3 is Jon Brittenum “The Quarterbackin Man”.

  12. Far From Razorback Country Says:

Two guys not to forget. Not sure if Lamar Mchan counts as QB in the single wing. He was the highest Heisman vote getter (#2) in all Razorback history. Also Billy Moore was the only Razorback first team All American QB. Far From

  13. Toney Busby Says:

My selections are (1) Joe Ferguson (2) Matt Jones (3) Ron Calcagni (4) Quinn Grovey and (4) Bill Montgomery

  14. Jason Says:

Matt Jones has to be in the top 3.

  15. Roger B Says:

    1. Joe Ferguson
    2. Quinn Grovey
    3. Clint Stoerner
    4. Bill Montgomery
    5. Barry Lunney

  16. Garphy Says:

No question: Bill Montgomery was the best. Mr. Cool, always stood tall in the pocket, started from the first game his sophomore year, great arm, great field leadership. Best winning percentage of all Hawg QB’s. What excitement he and Dicus and Burnett brought to the U of A in the late 60’s. Of course, it was a different game then, but I would still take Montgomery in today’s game, and win most of the time. Jon Brittenum would be my No. 2, with Grovey, Ferguson, and Jones at 3, 4, and 5. Ryan Mallett may eclipse them all before he is done, just sayin’.
