It’s Sept. 2. Do you remember what happened on this date three years ago?
Arkansas sufffered its second-straight blowout loss to Southern Cal, losing 50-14 in the 2006 opener in Razorback Stadium. But it wasn’t that loss that interested FoxSports.com columnist Mark Kriegel. It’s what then-true freshman quarterback Mitch Mustain did, stepping onto the field late in the game, leading a touchdown drive and winning the starting job – for awhile.
Kriegel spoke with Mustain and wrote this piece on the former Springdale High star. Mustain, who transferred to USC after the 2006 season, is sitting third on Southern Cal’s depth chart behind true freshman Matt Barkley and redshirt freshman Aaron Corp. It’s not a good sign that Mustain, who sat behind former USC QB Mark Sanchez last year, will ever hold the starting job at USC.
So on the surface, it looks like leaving Arkansas was a bad move for Mustain. Especially since he was 8-0 as a starter before being replaced by Casey Dick. But the quarterback told Kriegel he’s not looking at it that way:
I ask the Trojans’ third-string quarterback if he’d do it all over again.
“Yup,” he said. “I took that risk to be here and it hasn’t paid off yet, but there’s still a lot of time … These are long seasons. People get hurt. Things happen. Last year with Mark is a good example. There were several times I was a couple inches from playing the rest of the season or playing the full game at least.”
Anyway, it’s a good read. It’s hard to believe that USC game was three years ago, though.
How things have changed.

Aaron Corp temporarily beat Mastain out as the backup to Sanchez last season, and now, this season, he’s lost the starting job to a True Freshmen, (Barkley) while also losing the backup job once again to Corp.
Is this good? Nope.

Mitch Mustain needed someone to tell him what my dad always told me, “you can’t grow roots if you keep moving around all the time.” Had he stayed put, Ryan Mallet might be somewhere else but he would be starting his 2nd season under Bobby Petrino as one of the most heralded Quarterbacks In Razorbacks Football History. For him to say he’d do the same thing all over again only demonstrates the immaturity that led him out west to begin with. Mallet will get all the glory and more that could have been Mustains. Anyone want to buy a Mitch Mustain High School football trading card?

Ok in hindsight it was a terrible move. I like that Mitch is smart enought to be politically correct about it. He’s still a member of the team and no other attitude will help himself or anyone else. He has plenty of time to complain next year after his typical free agent training camp run is over.

Face it, Mustain was a product of a system. Take him out of the system and we find out he is average at best, he couldn’t beat out Casey Dick for pete sake. He’s definitely not going to beat out any true 5-star QB’s that USC bring in.
He never could see the safety cheating over from the middle of the field. Just like Brashears he was more of Arkansas High School hype than a great QB. Getting away took the home town pressure off, but going to USC pretty much guarantees he won’t play unless ALL of the other QB’s get hurt.

Damian WIlliams probably made the right move. He looked at his options and realized that if he stayed at Arkansas he would only have Mitch Mustain to pass to him and he would be 2nd tear to the greatest running game in college football (McFadden/Jones/HiIlis). So he left his home state and is now a star at USC a premier college football dynasty.
Mustain on the other hand, gave up being the golden boy of all of Arkansas. He had the opportunity to start 8 games as a true freshman, that is incredible, but for him it was not enough. It is only fitting for him to now not play at all and have to sit on the bench while another true freshman starts before him. Had he been loyal to his state and all of us in Arkansas, he would now be under one of the greatest college football QB head coaches. Instead of riding the bench as a 3rd string QB at USC, he would only be riding the bench as a 2nd string QB here in Arkansas. I am so glad that the University of Arkansas now has Ryan Mallet, he is truly the QB that we deserve and the young foolish Mustain is getting exactly what he deserves…nothing.

Listen up. If any other QB had suffered the humiliations and defamations that Mustain did, they might be in the same boat. Houston Nutt ruined Mitch. Period. Nutt wasn’t a very good qb in high school or college – he did quit at UA – doesn’t know how to coach a qb nor a balanced offense. Plus Nutt was jealous of Malzhan. The Email really dealt a blow to Mustain’s self esteem. Don’t forget – Damian Williams had been lied to as well. Mitch’s okay and will get a degree from one of the finest universities around and that means a lot. Heck, Matt Cassell never played a down on The Hill and look where he’s at now.
Again, Nutt and his posse messed with Mitch’s head, would’ve been sanctioned at any other NCAA school and now they’re already sliding downhill at Ole Miss.
People at USC understand, why can’t the Nutt lovers leave it alone?

Mary and all of the other Mustain lovers.
The best thing happened for Arkansas when Mustain left and Nutt for that matter. However, true football fans realize that the recruiting trail and reality are two separate things. I think we can all agree that the 2 best, if not 3 best players on that team were the running backs each averaging over 5 yards per carry. Houston Nutt would have been fired and deservedly so, if he had put the offense completely in the hand of Gus Malzahn and let Mustain throw the ball all over the field with those studs in the backfield. This is a team game. He did the best thing for the TEAM. Pete Carroll is doing what he thinks is the best thing for his TEAM. He should have stayed one more year and won the competition with Dick. He WOULD have.
Luckily for the majority of us Razorback fans he didn’t, Nutt got roasted and couldn’t handle the fall out and now we have Bobby Petrino and Ryan Mallett decided to come back home.
So Thank you Mitch Mustain and Houston Nutt.
