So what happened Saturday at Ole Miss?
The Razorbacks tried to put that in perspective when they met with the media. Bobby Petrino, safety Matt Harris, running back Michael Smith and receiver Lucas Miller all spoke a little while ago. Something Smith said about Arkansas’ frame of mind for Ole Miss stood out.
“I don’t even think that our team was feeling sorry for ourselves coming off the Florida game,” Smith said. “I think it was moreso, we play Florida so close or so tough that we maybe took Ole Miss for granted and forgot that this is the SEC and at any given time anybody can beat anybody. And we just felt like well, OK, we played the No. 1 team so close, we’re going to run over Ole Miss and we didn’t prepare the way that we needed to coming up to the game, coming off of the practices. Friday night meetings or Saturday morning walk throughs. Just our whole mindset wasn’t where it needed to be. we felt like the game was already won before we had played it.”
What else did we get out of the news conference?
• We learned that Arkansas’ depth at cornerback will be tested this week. Ramon Broadway will miss Saturday’s game with a hamstring injury, while Rudell Crim is questionable after he suffered a hip pointer. That means the Razorbacks will be leaning on freshman David Gordon, who will likely earn his first start against Eastern Michigan. Darius Winston and Greg Gatson will see more practice time, too.
• How much of a challenge does Arkansas face preparing for 0-7 Eastern Michigan. A pretty big one, apparently. Arkansas is much more talented than Eastern Michigan, but Harris said it’s going to be a difficult week because the Razorbacks will be “fighting the urge” to take EMU lightly.
• I wrote in notes the other day that TE D.J. Williams did not catch a pass for the second straight game at Ole Miss. It’s a statistic that Petrino is well aware of and he doesn’t like it. Petrino said it’s apparent that the confidence between QB Ryan Mallett and Williams is not there, but said it has to improve. Petrino said Williams is a talented pass catcher who can only help the offense.
[...] to have to fight the urge to take 0-7 Eastern Michigan lightly.2. Running back Michael Smith says UA might have taken Ole Miss for granted last week. Note to the Hogs: If a team has a better record than you… don’t take them [...]

Much as I like coach P. Take any team for granted makes me dizzy. Put the backup QB in. Mallet may be a pro someday but come on give even him credit and coach him, don’t think he’s a finished product. If you asked him from the other side of the room to throw you your keys. He would sling them a hundred miles an hour over your head. And the incredible sad thing he would do it again the next day. Come on coaching staff this is the SEC. Have to prepare every game like the other team just slapped your mother. EVERYBODY is good. Got to be prepared with your A plus game. EVERY GAME. EVERY GAME.

Still PO’ed. Take for granted. Are we fans the only people that knew we would get Ole Miss’s best shot? Can our pre-season first team senior running back REALLY say that on a Monday? Again love coach P (so far) but that’s what I worry about not having a coach with hog blood. I got so sick of Nutt but take a team for granted when we didn’t even play in a bowl game the previous year. Come on coaching staff freaking toughen up. I’m done.

When will Arkansas players and coaches ever realize they can never take anyone for granted in this conference, or for that matter any team? There is not enough talent on the teams to do that. They should have been fired up to play Ole Miss and play their best game after taking Florida to the brink, and playing against Nutt, and a pre-season top 10 team. Instead, the team and coaches put out an uninspired performance and as a result their chances for a good bowl game took a big hit. I hope they can get their heads straight for the rest of the year. That was a very disappointing performance to watch as a Hog fan.
