Tuesday Morning Links

It’s Tuesday of Georgia week, and I’m still feeling the effects from watching Monday Night Football. (Darren McFadden ran well for the Oakland Raiders, but thankfully the fourth quarter had enough drama to make up for a lackluster first three quarters.)

Anyway, there’s plenty to read about the Razorbacks and Bulldogs, who’ll face each other at 6:45 p.m. Saturday on ESPN. I wrote an article for today’s newspaper on whether it’s better that Arkansas is well rested heading into this weekend or No. 23 Georgia is battled tested.

Robbie Neiswanger discussed the possibility of backup quarterback Tyler Wilson splitting reps with starter Ryan Mallett in his notebook. Wilson got plenty of snaps in Arkansas’ 48-10 rout of Missouri State in the season opener, but coach Bobby Petrino was coy when asked about playing both quarterbacks.

Here are some links from Georgia’s standpoint. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution came up with a quick summary of Arkansas for Bulldog fans. And of course, the AJC couldn’t go through the week without bringing up Petrino’s decisi0n to abruptly leave the Atlanta Falcons for Arkansas. The paper put together a poll to determine which sports figure made the worst exit from town.

The Athens Banner-Herald has a story today on the high number of turnovers committed by the Bulldogs through the first two games of the season. A coach never likes to hear that opponents have score 26 points off turnovers against his team.

Well, that’s it for now. But you can follow me on Twitter (@NWAAlex).

Practices Open To The Public Until Aug. 22

Arkansas officials just sent out a list of guidelines for the start of fall camp. And while many of them are for the media, here is something that should interest fans:

”All practices from August 6 to 21 will be open to the public and media. Practices after August 21 will be closed, however.”

So if you want to see the Razorbacks practice before the start of the season, you have a window over the next few weeks to do so.

SEC Media Days: New Turf Field Turned Over To Hogs Today

I apologize in advance if you’re tired of reading about the new synthetic surface inside Reynolds Razorback Stadium, but I have a quick update about it.

Arkansas athletic director Jeff Long said Wednesday that the construction work on the turf is done and that the Razorbacks will likely use the field for the first time later today.

”The turf gets turned over to us today, and I believe they’re going to have  a conditioning workout this evening,” said Long, who attended the first day of the SEC Media Days in Hoover, Ala. “So we’ll officially have the field today.”

Long said a few weeks ago that he expected the turf to be in place by the end of July, ahead of his original hope that the field would be complete by early August.

”The construction folks have turned it over to us,” Long said. “They’ve done all the testing for compression and everything passes with flying colors, and it’s now ours to work out and take control of.”

Long said he believes that the Razorbacks will benefit from the construction getting done early, allowing them to work on the synthetic surface before the start of preseason camp on Aug. 6.

”They can do conditioning stuff out there and get used to the field,” Long said. “And I think being on the surface and being on the stadium will just help our team this tough season ahead.”

SEC Media Days: Media Days To Start, ESPN Announces Schedule

OK, now that I’ve gotten some sleep and a cup of coffee, I’m ready for the SEC Media Days to start in an hour or so. Apparently, I’m not the only one.

Radio Row in the hallway of the Wynfrey Hotel is filled with sports talk radio hosts discussing anything and everything SEC related. ESPN’s college football crew has arrived. And the media guides for all 12 SEC schools have been passed out to the reporters in attendance.

SEC commissioner Mike Slive will be the first person to take the microphone today, and there’s no doubt that the bulk of his talk with the media will center around the SEC’s new 15-year TV deal with ESPN that reportedly came at a $2.2 billion price tag.

The TV deal goes into effect next month and will give the league a lot more national exposure.

ESPN has announced its TV schedule for the first three weeks of the college football season. Arkansas’ Sept. 5 season opener against Missouri State will be shown on ESPN360.com and ESPN GamePlan.

As we’ve known for a few weeks, ESPN or ESPN2 will broadcast Arkansas’ Sept. 19 game against Georgia in Reynolds Razorback Stadium.

Will Arkansas Win?

I can’t believe I just typed that in the headline. But, at this point, it’s a valid question.

The Razorbacks trail Western Illinois 10-7 at halftime and haven’t looked good. At all.

There was one glimmer of hope when they drove 81 yards to score the first touchdown of the game. But WIU answered on its next possession, punching the ball in the end zone to regain the lead at halftime.

Some key stats:

• Arkansas has outgained WIU 144-126. But it has just 34 rushing yards. WIU has 86.

• The Razorbacks have turned the ball over twice. WIU has no turnovers.

• WIU has a 17:26 to 12:34 edge in time of possession.

• Arkansas has given up four sacks in the first half after allowing just 13 all of last season.

Links Time

We’ve made a vow to provide you, our loyal readers, with more links to interesting stuff on a regular basis.

It could be Arkansas related. It could deal with the SEC. It could be, well, anything we want. Hopefully it will be some interesting reading one way or another in addition to our newspaper. Preferably, it will be in the morning so that you can scan the Internet while you’re at work. We won’t tell your bosses.

Hit the Links. Do it. Do it.

I know it’s Tuesday afternoon, but let’s get things started now:

• First off, there’s an interesting story on former Arkansas and Springdale High receiver Damian Williams in the L.A. Times today. The story digs into Williams’ departure from Arkansas and his role with the Southern Cal. Nothing off the wall. Just some interesting stuff.

• I’ve been checking ESPN.com writer Chris Low’s blog since it started a few weeks ago and there always seems to be some plenty of interesting information on it. Well, Low is continuing his tour around the SEC and will be in Fayetteville today and tomorrow. Want proof? Read this.

• Fox Sports has got a pretty extensive Arkansas preview on its site today. It breaks down the Hogs position-by-position and also analyzes its best players, schedule, etc., etc. So if you’re looking for another perspective on Arkansas’ season, go ahead and click this link, too.

I think that will do for now. The afternoon practice will end in about 30 minutes and we’ll let you know if there is anything newsworthy that comes out of it.
