Petrino Said Ambrose’s Punishment Will Be “In House”

Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino said earlier today on the SEC teleconference that he has spoken to backup defensive end Damario Ambrose, who was arrested Tuesday on a misdemeanor charge of failure to appear.

“Yeah, I’ve talked to him and everything we do there (as far as punishment) is in house,” Petrino said.

Ambrose’s arrest stemmed from traffic ticket he received in Johnson in January. He was booked into the Washington County Jail at 9:55 a.m. Tuesday, and after posting $464 bond, he was at practice later in the day.

Ambrose isn’t expected to miss any playing time because of his arrest. Cornerback Ramon Broadway wasn’t suspended or demoted from his starting job after getting arrested in late August on a similar charge.

Ambrose Arrested for Failure to Appear

Arkansas defensive end Damario Ambrose was arrested earlier today on a misdemeanor charge of failure to appear.

The arrest was in response to a speeding ticket Ambrose received in Johnson in January. A warrant was issued after Ambrose failed to appear in Johnson City Court. Ambrose was booked into the Washington County Jail at 9:55 a.m., but released at 12:03 p.m. after posting $464 bond.

It’s not yet clear if Ambrose’s arrest will affect his status for Saturday’s game. He’s not the first Arkansas player arrested on failure to appear charges this year. Cornerback Ramon Broadway was arrested for failure to appear earlier this year and did not lose playing time.

We’ll let you know if we hear any more about Ambrose’s arrest.

Practice 4: What Did We Learn?

After three days of practicing in the afternoon, Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino decided to change it up by going at 9 a.m. today. And for the first time during preseason camp, Petrino had the team practice on the new synthetic surface inside Reynolds Razorback Stadium.

  Here is what we learned:

Running back Knile Davis returned to practice today after missing the first three days because of the death of his father. The freshman took part in individual drills, but he was held out of team drills. It’s good to see him back after going through what I imagine was a rough week personally.

Defensive end Jake Bequette continued to miss practice because of an apparent left arm injury. But the sophomore had a scare this morning when it looked like he overheated while doing conditioning exercises by walking the stadium steps. Arkansas athletic trainers had to put bags of ice on Bequette to try to cool him down, but after several minutes slumped on a bench, he was able to walk off on his own.

While Bequette misses practice, junior Damario Ambrose is getting work with the first-team defense.

Cornerback Ramon Broadway and safety Matt Harris said the new stadium surface is a lot faster than the grass that was torn up after spring practice. Harris said there’s a little bit more “bounce” in the field, and Broadway said the speed of the field is something he’ll have to get used to. But so far, they like it.

Ambrose (Knee) Out For Saturday

Arkansas’ depth at the defensive end position has taken a hit over the past few weeks because of injuries.

Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino said this morning that sophomore Damario Ambrose won’t play in Saturday’s game at South Carolina because of a knee injury suffered in last week’s win over Tulsa.

“Well, he won’t be available for this game,” Petrino said.

Petrino hasn’t given any specifics about the severity of Ambrose’s injury, and he declined to answer when I asked him if Ambrose will need surgery or if his knee will heal on its own.

”We don’t like to talk that much about injuries, particularly when we’re preparing for another game,” Petrino said.

Along with Ambrose, there is a chance that Arkansas defensive end Adrian Davis could miss his second consecutive game because of a sprained left knee. I’ll know more about Davis’ status after today’s practice.

Well, that’s it for now. I’ll try to  give an update after practice.

Football Injury Updates

Just got in from the portion of practice open to us media folks. There is injury news to pass along:

• Defensive end Damario Ambrose wasn’t on the practice field after suffering what appeared to be a knee injury against Tulsa. In addition, Adrian Davis didn’t practice again after missing all of last week (and the Tulsa game) because of a sprained knee. Without those two, Antwain Robinson and Jake Bequette were working with the starters at defensive end. Lavunce Askew and Chris Berezansky were with the second team. And it looked like linebacker Ryan Powers was sticking around with the defensive ends after getting a few snaps there last Saturday.

• Another defensive player, linebacker/defensive back Jerico Nelson, didn’t practice. Nelson hurt his knee against Tulsa and the severity of the injury is unknown. It’s bad enough that he can’t practice, though. Nelson has started seven games at a variety of positions. He has been a good hybrid guy.

• There’s better news on the offensive line. Tackle Ray Dominguez was back on the field and looked like he was moving around pretty well. Dominguez missed last week’s game with an ankle injury. He was replaced by Michael Aguirre, who had been hurt for a couple weeks too. Not sure if Dominguez will get his starting spot back or not. At the very least, it looks like he could be ready to play.

Pregame Blog

The pregame Q&A is going to be replaced with the abbreviated pregame blog today.

Let’s just say we’re having a little computer trouble. The pregame Q&A that I just spent 20 minutes working on is now out there floating in cyberspace. So before we get going, here are a couple quick notes:

• One significant lineup change for the Razorbacks today: Defensive end Damario Ambrose will be starting in place of Adrian Davis today. No word on why the change has been made. Davis is here in uniform, though.

• Grant Cook will start his second game at strong guard in place of DeMarcus Love (ankle). At tackle, Ray Dominguez is back in his starting spot after missing last week’s game.

• We don’t know who is starting at quarterback for the Tigers yet. It has been listed as a “game-time decision.” Chris Todd did take the first snaps in warmups, while Kodi Burns was second. We’ll see soon.

Paul Petrino Speaks, Miller Returns

Arkansas has wrapped up another Tuesday practice. Here are a few of the tidbits from what offensive coordinator Paul Petrino had to say.

Petrino said the players, though down after the past two lopsided losses, had a good two-hour practice Tuesday evening.

“Well, they actually came out and practiced hard today. There was a lot of energy,” Petrino said. “I don’t think it’s been the effort. I just think we’ve got to keep grinding, keep working hard and just keep believing in what we believe in.

“I think that’s the biggest thing. We talked to them today about coming out here with a great attitude and great energy and I thought they responded and did a great job of it.”

Wide receiver Lucas Miller returned to practice after missing last Saturday’s 52-10 loss to fifth-ranked Texas because of a concussion. He’s expected to play against No. 12 Florida. However, Petrino said Miller appeared a bit rusty after missing the past few days with the concussion.

Meanwhile, backup defensive end Damario Ambrose was working with the injured players at the first part of practice. It’s uncertain what his injury is or whether he returned to practice once the media was asked to leave after the first 20 minutes.

Well, that’s it for now. Check back with us later.
