Official: Saturday’s Game Postponed

This comes right from Arkansas:

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Arkansas-Texas football game scheduled for this Saturday, Sept. 13, at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin has been postponed due to the weekend forecast of severe weather in Austin and surrounding areas related to Hurricane Ike.

The game between the Razorbacks and the Longhorns will be played in Austin, on Saturday, Sept. 27. Both Arkansas and Texas had the same open date, accommodating the re-scheduling of the game. Kickoff time and television arrangements will be determined at a later date for the Sept. 27 game.

“As we worked closely with the University of Texas to consider the options, the safety and welfare of the student-athletes, coaches and fans was everyone’s top priority,” Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics Jeff Long said. “In considering all of the factors, both institutions felt that postponing the game was the appropriate course of action. We appreciate the cooperation of the University of Texas and the various state and federal authorities in monitoring the situation and working together to make this decision. With this decision, we can now turn our focus to the safety and well-being of the citizens of Texas and others affected by Hurricane Ike.”

Signs Aren’t Encouraging

Here is a sign that’s not too encouraging for Saturday’s game between Arkansas and Texas:

This is from Texas’ athletic Web site:

The University of Texas soccer match against Houston has been moved to Thursday, Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. The match was originally scheduled for a 7 p.m. kick on Friday, Sept. 12, but was changed due to the threat of bad weather from Hurricane Ike.

This might be the beginning of several game changes, including Saturday’s football game in Austin.

No word on Saturday’s game

As of 5 p.m. Wednesday, we have not received any word from Arkansas officials that Saturday’s game at Texas has been postponed or moved to another site because of Hurricane Ike.

There is a rumor going around that the game could be moved to Reynolds Razorback Stadium because of the hurricane. But this is just a rumor that doesn’t seem to have any truth to it.

Yes, it’s true that Arkansas’ grounds crew has painted the Razorback logo at midfield. But don’t buy too much into this. Arkansas associate athletic director Kevin Trainor said the logo was painted for next Saturday’s game against Alabama, not because the Texas game could be moved to Fayetteville.

Hurricane Ike appears to be heading for the Texas coast, and there is a strong possibility that the storm could cause Saturday’s game to be postponed. Officials from both schools are expected to announce Thursday as to whether the game will go on as scheduled.

But it’s not looking too promising at the moment.
