Five Hogs Earn All-SEC Spots

Now that the Southeastern Conference title game is over with, it’s that time of year again. Postseason awards!

The Associated Press released its all-SEC team and five Razorbacks made their way on the list.

He's a first-team guy.

A first-team kind of guy.

Tight end D.J. Williams was named to the first-team offense after leading the Hogs with 61 catches for 723 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Williams was the only Arkansas player to earn first-team honors.

After that, running back Michael Smith, center Jonathan Luigs, defensive tackle Malcolm Sheppard and punter Jeremy Davis earned second-team honors. Luigs — who won the Jacobs Blocking Trophy and was a first-team, all-SEC pick last season — was bumped by Alabama center Antoine Caldwell.

The SEC’s individual honors also were handed out by the AP. Here they are:

Offensive Player of the Year — Tim Tebow (QB, Florida)

Defensive Player of the Year — Eric Berry (CB, Tennessee)

Freshman of the Year — Julio Jones (WR, Alabama)

Coach of the Year — Nick Saban (Alabama)

Five Keys Review: Kentucky Game

Happy Houston Nutt week! There’s no doubt Arkansas is going to be crazy this week with the build up to Nutt’s return to Fayetteville. We’ll have plenty on that this week, but before we get going, let’s review the keys to the Kentucky game.

1. Stay Stout Up Front: The Razorbacks held their own in the trenches in the first half. The ground game was working, Casey Dick stayed off the ground, and the defensive front turned in big plays. But that dominance disappeared in the second half. Kentucky’s defensive line started to take over and the ‘Cats offensive front kept the Razorbacks at bay. Because of the ending, I’ll say KEY NOT ACCOMPLISHED.

2. Eliminate Turnovers: The defense did a good job of taking the ball away, but four turnovers killed them. The Razorbacks fumbled at the Kentucky 1 and threw an interception at the 4 in the first half. De’Anthony Curtis’ fumble with less than five minutes left set the stage for the comeback. And Dick’s last-minute interception capped a stunning night. KEY NOT ACCOMPLISHED

3. Improve on Special Teams: The good news for the Razorbacks is that they didn’t make any backbreaking blemishes on special teams. Kentucky’s longest return of the night was 27 yards, place kicker Shay Haddock hit two field goals, Jeremy Davis averaged 34.3 yards a punt. I will say Dennis Johnson’s decision to bring the football out of the end zone in the final minutes backfired. But overall, there was improvement on special. KEY ACCOMPLISHED

4. Run the Football: The Razorbacks did a tremendous job of running the football against the Wildcats, piling up a season-high 236 yards. Michael Smith was the big reason for that. He ran for 192 yards on 35 carries before leaving the game in the fourth quarter. Arkansas’ backups didn’t do so well though. As mentioned, Curtis averaged 1.8 yards on nine attempts. He also had the costly fumble. And when the Razorbacks needed to run out the clock they couldn’t without Smith. But still, KEY ACCOMPLISHED

5. Be Wary of Cobb: If the game was judged by the first three quarters, Arkansas would receive a passing grade. Randall Cobb did provide a spark when he moved to quarterback in the first half, but didn’t lead any touchdown drives. He didn’t kill them running, either. But Cobb caught 5 passes for 73 yards. That included the two easy touchdown catches to beat the Hogs. KEY NOT ACCOMPLISHED

Five Keys Review: Alabama Wrap

Arkansas’ loss to Alabama isn’t quite in the books until we take a quick look back at the keys to the game. So before Texas week officially begins (again) here’s how things went:

1. Start Stronger: For the third straight game the Razorbacks failed to score in the first quarter. Even worse, Alabama led 21-0. The defense gave up a big run. The offense threw an interception that was returned for a score. And a special teams blunder helped Alabama score its first touchdown. NOT ACCOMPLISHED

2. Run the Football: The Razorbacks had some success running the football against Alabama, which had the nation’s top run defense. Michael Smith gained 81 yards in the first half. The problem was, Arkansas’ slow start and enormous hole eliminated any chance they had to keep running the ball. Arkansas finished with 92 rushing yards in the game. So I’ll have to say NOT ACCOMPLISHED

3. Improve on Special Teams: A bad start in this area. Elton Ford’s roughing the punter penalty gave Alabama a second chance on its first possession. The Tide scored. But Dennis Johnson proved capable of big things on kickoff returns. Javier Arenas didn’t hurt the Hogs because of punter Jeremy Davis and good coverage. And place kicker Alex Tejada even knocked two extra points through the uprights. So despite the big loss, this key was ACCOMPLISHED

4. Get Off the Field: That’s funny. Arkansas really didn’t stay on the field long. The problem was, Alabama was scoring quickly. There was the one play, 87-yard drive. There was the 2-minute touchdown drive. There was the one-play, 62-yard drive. All I can say is ACCOMPLISHED. BUT THAT’S NOT A GOOD THING

5. Win in the Trenches: It was clear early on that Alabama was going to win this area. The Tide was just bigger, better and stronger in the trenches on both sides of the ball. Alabama’s goal line stand in the second quarter was really all the proof you needed. So was ‘Bama’s 300-plus rushing yards. NOT ACCOMPLISHED.

Petrino Talks About Crawford, Smith and the O-line

Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino wrapped up his first Sunday post-game teleconference with the media, and he mentioned a few things of note. There will be plenty more to come, but here are some of the highlights:

Petrino said wide receiver London Crawford suffered a concussion during Saturday’s 28-24 win over Western Illinois, and it’s uncertain when the junior will be able to return. Petrino said there were times during the preseason when a player returned from a concussion in two days and another player who needed more than a week to shake off the effects. Crawford was injured while returning a kickoff.

Running back Michael Smith will return to the team after being suspended for Saturday’s season opener because of a minor NCAA violation involving the misuse of textbooks. Petrino said Smith will reclaim his starting job for Saturday’s game against Louisiana-Monroe.

Petrino didn’t rule out making some changes on special teams after the unit struggled in several areas. He said it might be asking too much of freshman free safety Elton Ford to return kickoffs along with everything else he’s doing. And with Crawford out for now with a concussion, some other player could be returning kicks.

Meanwhile, Petrino said former Springdale High star Alex Tejada could get the opportunity to attempt kickoffs after Jeremy Davis struggled in the role on Saturday night.

And finally, Petrino said he doesn’t intend to make any personnel changes to correct the problems on offensive line. He said the unit is thin on depth, so that rules out making any drastic changes. He said some of the sacks by Western Illinois were the result of communication problems and players other than the offensive linemen not picking up their men.

Well, time to write my follow from one of the more bizarre games I’ve seen in awhile.
