Quick Scrimmage Observations

OK, so now that I’ve gotten some lunch – and more importantly, some caffeine after a long night of writing – I’m back at the office and ready to talk some Arkansas scrimmage. In case you missed it, there was a lot to digest after the Razorbacks went 177 plays, according to Arkansas’ count.

Quarterback Ryan Mallett didn’t have his best day. He overthrew several open receivers and missed on a few throws that would have turned into either big gains or touchdowns. Still, the sophomore finished 31-of-50 for 379 yards with three touchdowns and one interception.

Mallett’s lone interception proved costly when defensive tackle Lavunce Askew caught it and returned it 59 yards for a touchdown. It was as if the ball just slipped out of Mallett’s hand.

Tyler Wilson got into a rhythm at times and led the second-team offense downfield against the first-team defense. He finished 22-of-33 for 248 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Afterward, Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino criticized his first-team defense, saying that he thought the unit would dominate more than it did.

Wide receiver Greg Childs continued to look strong, catching nine passes for 110 yards with one touchdown. The sophomore admitted afterward that he has picked up his game over the past week, and he appears to be on the verge of having a breakout year if things go as they have been lately.

Fellow wide receiver Cartlon Salters also had a strong performance, making catches for 119 yards. He also caught a pass on a fourth down, leading Petrino to joke afterward that Salters is their fourth-down receiver. As you might remember, Salters had a big fourth-down catch against LSU last year that allowed Casey Dick to connect with London Crawford for the Miracle on Markham 2.

We will soon have full scrimmage statistics posted on the blog. Bye for now. Oh, check me out on Twitter (@NWAAlex).

What Did Petrino Say?

Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino met with the media today. It was sort of a preview of preseason practice/update on summer workouts/injury report all rolled into one.

In other words, nothing too big came out of it. But there was plenty worth noting:

• First and foremost, Petrino said there is no news on Broderick Green’s status for 2009. The back is still waiting to hear from the NCAA on whether he would be eligible next season. I asked Petrino if he was surprised how long it was taking. He said no because they had to wait for Mallett last year, too. Arkansas will prepare Green as if he is going to be there if they don’t hear any news. If they hear he can’t play, they’ll simply treat it like a player went down with an injury.

• Speaking of injuries, Petrino said Michael Smith, Lucas Miller and Elton Ford are all 100 percent and will be full speed for preseason practice. Smith and Miller sat out the spring because of injuries. Ford is coming back from the neck injury that sidelined him the second half of last year. Petrino said Arkansas probably won’t practice Smith and Miller during both practices when two-a-days begin. But they will get plenty of work in the preseason.

• Knile Davis is back to full speed to as of yesterday, Petrino said. Davis, a freshman, broke his ankle during spring practice. It was the same injury he suffered his senior season of high school. On the other end, Brandon Barnett isn’t ready. Petrino said he is running straight ahead right now, but isn’t ready to make cuts. So it will take some time for Barnett.

• DT Lavunce Askew spent a month away from the team after being arrested on his felony burglary charges, but has been back working with the Razorbacks this month. Askew’s charges were dropped last week and Petrino said he continues to watch the defensive tackle to make sure he’s doing things right. Still no word on if he’ll practice on Aug. 6.

• And just to clarify: Players report Aug. 5. Practice begins Aug. 6. The team’s media day will be held Aug. 8.

That’s the personnel report for now. Petrino said much, much more, but that’s all I’ve got time for at the moment. I’ll have a story and notes in tomorrow’s paper, so check RazorbackCentral.com for more from the press conference.

Askew Won’t Face Felony Theft Charge, Prosecutor Says

  Want some Monday news?

Arkansas defensive tackle Lavunce Askew won’t face a felony charge in connection with stealing a laptop computer after the victim informed Washington County prosecutors that he didn’t want to press charges against the sophomore.

Askew, 20, was arrested May 30 after he admitted to Fayetteville police that he had stolen a laptop computer worth $1,300 from a man’s home, according to a preliminary police report. The report said the sophomore had the computer in his hands when he met with police.

Askew’s arraignment was scheduled for this morning, but charges weren’t filed against him.

Matt Durrett, chief deputy prosecuting attorney for Washington County, said Monday afternoon that the felony charge of theft of property against Askew is in the process of being dismissed.

Durrett said he spoke with the victim — an unidentified man — who said he didn’t want to press charges against Askew because the laptop computer was returned undamaged.

Durrett said the theft of property charge hasn’t been dismissed yet, but it will be made official once a judge signs an order throwing out the charge.

Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino suspended Askew indefinitely from the football team following his arrest. There is no word yet on whether Monday’s development will change Askew’s status.
