Tyler Wilson Out Indefinitely With Mono

Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino confirmed Wednesday morning that backup quarterback Tyler Wilson will be sidelined indefinitely after being diagnosed with infectious mononucleosis, better known as mono.

“The problem with mono is in some cases there is an enlargement of the spleen, and we don’t know when he’ll be back,” Petrino said. “But we know he’ll be out indefinitely.”

Petrino said redshirt freshman Nathan Dick will replae Wilson as the backup to starting quarterback Casey Dick for Saturday’s game against Ole Miss in Reynolds Razorback Stadium.

Wade To Miss Rest of Season, Miller Suffers Concussion

Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino just wrapped up his weekly Monday news conference, and here are a few tidbits from what he and several players said:

Petrino said wide receiver Marques Wade will miss the remainder of the season after tearing a knee ligament in last Saturday’s 49-14 loss to No. 8 Alabama. Wade is scheduled to have surgery this week.

Wade was suspended for the first two games because of a DWI arrest over the summer, and he was unable to finish his first game back after injuring his knee on a special teams play against the Crimson Tide.

Meanwhile, Petrino said wide receiver Lucas Miller suffered a concussion in last Saturday’s loss, and his status for this weekend’s game at No. 7 Texas depends on how quickly he can get over the effects from the concussion.

Freshman quarterback Tyler Wilson will get more reps with the No. 2 offense this week, Petrino said. There was talk early on that Wilson could redshirt this season, but Petrino decided to play him instead because he had outperformed redshirt freshman Nathan Dick in practice. Wilson is also “explosive” out of the Shotgun.

Wilson replaced starter Casey Dick in the fourth quarter of last Saturday’s loss to Alabama, and he completed 4-of-7 passes for 27 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

That’s it for now. Back to writing…

Nathan Dick Named Backup QB

Arkansas wrapped up its final practice of the week a few minutes ago, and I thought I’d drop a few notes on the blog before I headed home.

Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino said redshirt freshman Nathan Dick has been named the backup quarterback behind starter Casey Dick, his older brother. Nathan Dick has competed with freshman Tyler Wilson over the past few weeks for the No. 2 job, and at one time, it appeared that Wilson might get it. But Nathan Dick will come in if needed against Western Illinois, followed by Wilson.

Petrino said that there is a chance that weakside linebacker Ryan Powers could get into Saturday’s season opener. Powers has been slowed by a strained right hamstring during the preseason, and it’s uncertain if that’s why he fell off the depth chart. But considering the lack of depth at the position, the sophomore could be needed.

Petrino refused to say whether there have been any changes to the depth chart he released Monday. But he did offer up a classic quote about whether all the freshman players are ready to play in front of 74,000 fans: “(They) got an extra pair of pants just in case something happens in warm-ups.”

Well, that’s about it for now. Time to head home and write a few stories.
