You have to like Ramon Broadway’s confidence. He’s a cornerback, so of course he’s going think that he can contain some of the SEC’s top wide receivers. Would you really want a cornerback who thought he was going to consistently get beat on Saturdays?
Broadway had plenty to say prior to facing Georgia wide receiver A.J. Green, calling Green a “great athlete” but not conceding that he’s a big-time playmaker.
”He definitely does a lot of things that a lot of veteran guys do,” Broadway said of Green. “But I like said, he hasn’t done nothing else that I haven’t seen.”
Broadway had more to say. Green passed off the cornerback’s remarks following last Saturday’s 52-41 win in Reynolds Razorback Stadium. It was apparent who got the upper hand after Green caught seven passes for 137 yards and two touchdowns, including one over Broadway.
A few days later, Broadway wasn’t about to gush over Alabama wide receiver Julio Jones, who’s arguably even better than Green when healthy.
I wasn’t trying to create more bulletin board material earlier this week when I asked Broadway what type of challenge does Jones pose for Arkansas’ secondary. It was an innocent question, especially since the Alabama receiver is expected to return from a badly bruised knee to play against Arkansas on Saturday.
Needless to say, Broadway was confident in himself and his teammates.
“He doesn’t really pose no challenge for the secondary. Like I say, he’s a great receiver,” Broadway said of Jones. “This is the SEC. We play great receivers week in and week out, so I’m not going to sit here and speak too much on it or speak too less on it.
”It is what it is. He’s a great receiver. We’re a great defensive team, so we’re going to come out and play ball.”
If that sounds familiar, here’s why: Broadway said nearly the same thing before he faced Green.
”That guy, he’s a great athlete” Broadway said of Green. “But we’re going to come out and play ball.”
Well, Arkansas’ coaches are hoping that the secondary can have more success against Jones than it did with Green. We’ll have to wait and see. Either way, it should be entertaining.
