It’s safe to say that Reggie Miller isn’t the biggest fan of former Arkansas forward Sonny Weems. Well, listening to Miller talk during the NBA Slam Dunk Contest, it was apparent that he has no idea who Weems is.
In case you missed it – after all, it is Valentine’s Day night – Weems assisted Denver Nuggets teammate J.R. Smith in the slam dunk contest. One of Smith’s dunks called for Weems to stand several rows up into the crowd and then lob a pass down for Smith to dunk.
Let’s just say it didn’t go according to plan.Â
Weems kept throwing pass after pass, and either the lob would bounce too high off the court or Smith would have trouble  getting a handle on the pass. This is when Miller, who was serving as an analyst for the dunk contest, started getting on Weems.
Miller was relentless, saying that Smith could have picked any number of people who could have thrown a better lob than Weems. In fact, Miller said even a ball boy would have done better.
You know it’s bad when Miller’s first reaction when he saw Weems standing on the court was, “Who’s that guy?” And after several misses, fellow TNT analyst Kenny Smith started making jokes at Weems’ behalf.
In Weems’ defense, some of his passes were good and Smith simply couldn’t handle them. And it’s hard to blame the former Arkansas star when the ball bounced too high since that should be expected when you lob a basketball from at least 20 feet up in the stands.
Needless to say, Smith didn’t advance to the finals of the slam dunk contest. That was the end of the night for both him and Weems. But at least Weems got some good TV face time.
And he did win the 2008 college slam dunk contest. So maybe someone will be lobbing him passes during next year’s NBA dunk contest. It probably won’t be Miller, though.
